Only use a high quality leather conditioner
If leather loses its natural oils it tends to crack and scuff. Leather conditioners are meant to be easily absorbed to help nourish natural fibres and give leather flexibility and longevity.
There are all sorts of leather conditioners. Some are better than others.
Conditioning Creams can work really well but because they are a liquid they are often difficult to apply and massage evenly into leather.
Conditioning Oils tend to use neatsfoot oil and lanolin which can make leather sticky and sometimes the leather can become rancid and rot. Stitching in leather can also break down with neatsfoot oil.
Conditioning Wax sits on the top of the leather and does not penetrate deeply and nourish the fibres. The wax can also mark clothing and is very difficult to wash out. These are only really useful as a barrier to other liquids.
Leather Conditioner is the best because it is easy to use, gets in to the leather and nurtures – but beware some of these products contain animal fats and are dark in colour which can both rot and discolour the leather.
